Ibn Shahin al-Zahiri, al-Isharat fi Ilm al-Ibarat

As for the banana tree, it is a foreign (non-Arab) man possessed of piety and dignity, from whom benefit is obtained, and he has earnings and a craft from which a result accrues to the elite and the common folk. And perhaps he is a man having two qualities, each one of which is useful for a number of things; and the evidence for this is drawn from its leaves, since they may be green or dry, and each of them enters into various matters.
