Ibn Shahin al-Zahiri, al-Isharat fi Ilm al-Ibarat

As for the banner, it is of two kinds: a kind belonging to kings, which is called a sanjaq and a shafaqa, and a kind belonging to the poor, which is forbidden. In general it is interpreted as a learned man, or an ascetic, or a leader (imam), or a brave man, or a rich man, or a generous man, or an open-handed man whom people take as an example.
