Then I asked him about the route of his chain of transmission to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he said: Some of the shaykhs informed me, on the authority of a man among the people of goodness and righteousness who was in a certain town and who used to see the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in dreams from time to time. A severe plague descended upon that town, until most of its people died. So some of its notables gathered before him and asked him that, when he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in a dream as was his custom, he should ask him for intercession on their behalf. So he saw the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he dictated to him from his own mouth this supplication, and commanded him to supplicate with it and to teach it to the people so that they might supplicate with it for the lifting of the plague.
