A rare anecdote: It is related that in a certain city there was a king named Yusuf, and in his beard there were three white hairs. He had a deputy, also named Yusuf, in one of the provinces. It was reported to him that the deputy had grown grey with three white hairs in his beard, like the king. The king slept that night and saw that the aforementioned deputy had come in and sat in the king's seat, while the king stood before him. He awoke terrified and did not relate his dream to anyone, and he summoned the aforementioned deputy in order to command that he be killed. When he stood before him and he was about to order the executioner to kill him, he summoned a companion of his who had taste and knowledge and who claimed the science of dream interpretation, and informed him of what he had seen and of what he intended concerning the aforementioned deputy at that very hour. He said to him: May our master the king be preserved from evils, and far be it from him to kill a soul without a crime. The interpretation of what the king saw has already appeared in its very form. He said: How is that? He said: As for what the king saw of the aforementioned deputy sitting in his noble seat, that is the king's own sitting, because he is his namesake and resembles him in greying; and as for the king's standing before him, that is the deputy's standing in this state in which he now is. And the dream has come out.

A rare case: A lowly person, one of the ignorant sort, saw that he had become a sultan and was sitting on the royal throne. He related this to one of the interpreters, attributing the matter to someone resembling himself who was of this description, and did not identify himself. So he interpreted it for him as meaning that he would be beaten and paraded in public disgrace, and perhaps a calamity would befall him. Before long that very thing happened to him.

A rare case. One of the interpreters said: I saw, while I was serving as deputy in the frontier city of Alexandria in the days of al-Malik al-Ashraf — and al-Malik al-Zahir was at that time Commander of Islam — that he was sitting upon the seat of al-Ashraf. So I entered upon him and kissed the ground before him, and he gave me something of the goods of this world. I informed trustworthy men of this, among them Shaykh Surur al-Maghribi and Shaykh Shams al-Din ibn 'Abd al-Muhsin, and they informed him of it. Then after a while he sat upon the throne of al-Malik al-Ashraf, just as I had seen for him, and I said: this is the interpretation of my dream from before; my Lord has made it come true.
