As for the fingers, Ibn Sirin said: The five fingers of the right hand indicate the five prayers: the thumb is the dawn prayer, the index finger is the noon prayer, the middle finger is the afternoon prayer, the ring finger is the sunset prayer, and the little finger is the night prayer. As for the fingers of the left hand, they are interpreted as a brother's children.

A rare anecdote. Shaykh Yusuf al-Karbuni, may Allah Most High have mercy on him, said: In the frontier city of Alexandria there was a deputy governor who had five children who were being tested, and he was tested through them, so that nothing in this world equalled his love for them in his estimation. He slept one night and saw as though his five fingers had been cut off, and great dread came over him. He awoke terrified and feared for his children. The Shaykh said: So he sent for me and related his dream to me. I understood what was in his mind, and I said to him: The matter is not as you have imagined; but I require from you a reward for interpreting this dream. He said: Yes. So I said to him: The five fingers are the five prayers, for you are not diligent in performing them. He said: You have spoken truly. So I said: Seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him, and keep steadfastly to your prayers.

(We were informed) by Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-'Abbas al-Akhmimi in Egypt, who said: Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Salama al-Tahawi related to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Junad, Ibrahim ibn Abi Dawud, and Abu Umayya related to us, saying: Sulayman ibn Harb related to us — and the wording is that of Ibn Junad — who said: Hammad ibn Zayd related to us from al-Hajjaj al-Sawwaf and Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir, that al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, would you like a fortress, fortified and well defended, which belonged to Daws in the time of ignorance?" But the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) declined that, on account of what Allah the Exalted had appointed for the Ansar. Then when the Prophet (peace be upon him) emigrated to Medina, al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr emigrated to him, and a man of his people emigrated along with him. He found Medina disagreeable and fell ill, so he went out and took some broad arrowheads and cut his finger joints with them, and his hands gushed with blood until he died. Then al-Tufayl saw him [in a dream].
