al-Isharat fi Ilm al-Ibarat, p. 129

attributed to Ibn Sirin, Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam

(The meadow) As for the meadow understood as vegetation whose essences are known — namely the kinds of herbage and blossoms — it is the world and its adornment, its wealth and its ornamentation, for blossoms are called ornament (zukhruf), and from this gold was called zukhruf. Herbage is sustenance for beasts and livestock, and it is like the wealth of the world, from which every person attains what his Lord has apportioned to him and made his provision, because it returns as flesh and milk, butter, clarified butter, honey, wool, hair and fur — so it is like the wealth by which the days are sustained.

Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, pp. 651–655

And perhaps the meadow indicates every place in which the world is earned and from which it is attained, and by which it is known and to which it is ascribed, such as the treasury and the market. Blossoms in particular may indicate the money-changers' market, the goldsmiths, and the places of gold.

Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, pp. 651–655

It has been narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) interpreted the meadow as the world and its lushness, and that he (peace be upon him) said: "The world is green and sweet." So the sweet herbage — everything that is sweet to the mouths of camels — indicates the lawful, and everything sour in it indicates the unlawful.

Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, pp. 651–655

And [it indicates] everything he attains through worry, toil and bitterness. Whatever of the plants is a medicine with which one is treated falls outside of wealth and provisions and indicates knowledge, wisdom and admonitions; and it may indicate wealth and the purely lawful. If they are sour in taste, then their sourness refers back to the worry, dispute and fatigue encountered in attaining it.

Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, pp. 651–655

Whatever of it is a deadly poison indicates seizure of the unlawful, taking the world at the expense of religion, the doors of usury, and innovations and caprices, and everything evil that comes out of mouths and enters them.

Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, pp. 651–655

As for when he sees endive and the like of it, such as coriander and similar things having bitterness and heat, these are worries and sorrows and unlawful wealth.

Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, pp. 651–655

Kinds and conditions of Meadow

garden/meadow own page

attributed to Ibn Sirin, Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam

(The garden meadow) As for the meadow whose substance is unknown, whose vegetation cannot be described except by its greenness, it indicates Islam, because of its freshness and the beauty of its splendour; and the Prophet (peace be upon him) interpreted it thus.

Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, pp. 651–655

It may indicate, within Islam, every place of merit and every spot in which Allah is supplicated, such as the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), the circles of dhikr, the gatherings of good, and the acceptance of the people of righteousness — because of his saying (peace be upon him): "What is between my grave and my pulpit is a meadow from the meadows of Paradise," and his saying (peace be upon him): "The grave is either a meadow from the meadows of Paradise or a pit from the pits of the Fire."

Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam, pp. 651–655

pillar in a green meadow with a handhold

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Dream Interpretation

"I only saw as though a pillar was placed in a green meadow and set upright in it, and at its top was a handhold, and at its bottom was a minsaf" — the minsaf is the servant boy — "and it was said: Climb it. So I climbed until I took hold of the handhold. I related it to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Abdullah will die while holding fast to the most trustworthy handhold."

tall man in the meadow (Abraham)

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Fath al-Bari, commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Dream Interpretation

His statement: ("As for the tall man who is in the meadow, he is Abraham") — in the narration of Jarir: "and the old man at the base of the tree is Abraham." Abraham was singled out only because he is the father of the Muslims. Allah said: "the religion of your father Abraham," and Allah said: "Indeed, the closest of people to Abraham are those who followed him" — the verse.
